[CGTN]夏璐:Building a peaceful future together with the strength of youth
发布时间:2025-08-07On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the World Youth Congress for Peace held in Beijing, extending warm congratulations on the event's opening and sincere greetings to the younger generation worldwide. Amid a complex and volatile international landscape marked by escalating geopolitical tensions, climate crises, and widening socio-economic divides, President Xi's message not only reaffirms China's unwavering commitment to global peace but also underscores its profound expectations for youth as pivotal agents in advancing sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
The Strategic significance of youth in global peace-building
In the message, President Xi has emphasized that peace is humanity's shared aspiration and a noble pursuit, while youth represent the future of the world. He has also stressed that the future of peace lies in the hands of younger generations, urging them to unite across borders and contribute wisdom and strength to global peace-building. This statement is deeply rooted in China's diplomatic philosophy of "building a community with a shared future for humanity," which advocates for inclusive, multi-stakeholder collaboration.
By making a core appeal – "transcend national divides and ideological differences, replacing confrontation with collaboration" – the message reflects a pragmatic response to contemporary global challenges. Youth, as the most digitally connected and socially mobile demographic, possess unique advantages in fostering cross-cultural dialogue. For instance, the 2023 Global Youth Summit on Climate Change in New York demonstrated how young activists from the world leveraged social media to pressure governments into accelerating net-zero commitments, proving that youth-led movements can make systemic change.
'Together for peace' in a multipolar world
Themed "Together for Peace," the congress resonated deeply with the international community's urgent call for peace amid escalating regional conflicts and economic inequality. According to the data published by the UN Refugee Agency, as of the end of 2024, an estimated 123.2 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence and events seriously disturbing public order. Simultaneously, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) report reveals that global poverty reduction has stalled, with youth unemployment rates in developing nations reaching 13.8 percent – even higher than the adult average.
In this context, the congress' emphasis on "inclusiveness" and "mutual trust" aligns with China's Global Development Initiative (GDI), which prioritizes equitable resource allocation and technology transfers. For instance, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has funded 1,300 education and healthcare projects in Africa and Asia, many of which engage local youth through vocational training programs. Not only do such initiatives address immediate developmental needs, but they also cultivate long-term peace by reducing inequalities that fuel conflict.
Overcoming challenges: From idealism to action
Despite their potential, young people still face systemic barriers to peace-building. In many countries, political marginalization limits youngsters' access to decision-making: for instance, only 2.6 percent of parliamentarians worldwide are under 30, according to the latest International Parliamentary Union (IPU) report on Youth Participation in National Parliaments. Economic precarity also hampers youth engagement, for instance, in Latin America, 40 percent of youth work in informal sectors, leaving little time for activism.
Thus, in order to address these gaps, the Congress proposed a multi-pronged approach. In terms of institutional inclusion, it advocates for youth quotas in national legislatures and UN agencies. In terms of digital empowerment, it leverages AI and blockchain to create transparent platforms for youth-led initiatives, such as Kenya's M-Pesa mobile payment system, which enabled grassroots fundraising during droughts. In terms of education reform, it proposes to integrate peace studies into global curricula, as done by UNESCO's Global Citizenship Education program.
Toward a harmonious future
The significance of the World Youth Peace Congress lies in its dual role as a multilateral platform for dialogue and a springboard for collective action. When younger generations from diverse backgrounds unite under the banner of "Together for Peace," they challenge zero-sum mentalities and model cooperative governance. As stated in the message, "Peace requires not just the absence of war, but the presence of justice" – a principle that youth are uniquely equipped to uphold through their idealism, innovation and moral courage.
The path ahead demands sustained inter-generational commitment. Governments must dismantle structural barriers to youth participation, while society should amplify youth voices through media and advocacy. Only by empowering the next generation as both beneficiaries and architects of peace can humanity achieve the vision of a world free from poverty, conflict and inequality.
